All jokes aside, Cannon Beach truly makes the BEST chocolate I have ever tasted. How did the town come to be named Cannon Beach? In the year 1846, the USS Shark had a shipwreck just off the shoreline from current day Cannon Beach. The ship’s cannon washed ashore and became an identifier for the location. People started to refer to the area as “Cannon Beach”. After decades of this, the community officially adopted the name, “Cannon Beach” in 1922. To this day, the cannon is still hanging around at the Cannon Beach History Center.
Ironically, in 2008, two more cannons were discovered on the beach and are believed to have come from the USS Shark. However, the two cannons are still in research at Texas A&M University until verification is obtained on these origins.
