Welcome to Shorty’s!

Yes, you heard that correctly. Short Sand Beach in Oregon is referred to by the locals as Shorty’s. A smaller group of folks refer to it as Short Sands. However, for clear understanding, I will use the location’s full name, Short Sands Beach.

Short Sand Beach is a beautiful, picturesque place nestled inside the boundaries of Oswald West State Park. It is not an incorporated community filled with homes and businesses. Instead, it is a scenic hideaway that is only accessible by a half mile trail through a lush forest of green Sitka spruce trees. Once you reach the clearing, the sun’s glow on the white sands of the beach are a welcoming sight. The cobalt blue waters and the sound of the waves rolling in lure people into spending entire days at Short Sand Beach.

You should add Short Sand Beach to your list if you plan to travel to the coastal shores of Oregon. It is a quiet, remote place that is, ironically, popular and well-explored. Let’s take a deeper look at everything you need to know about this cozy little hideout along the shores of the Oregon Coast.

1. Where in the world is Short Sand Beach, Oregon?

Short Sands Beach is situated inside Oswald West State Park in Arch Cape, Oregon. The beach is approximately 5 miles south of Cannon Beach and 5 miles north of Manzanita. To get to this amazing location, travel to Oswald West State Park along Highway 101. From there, you can access the trail from the park’s main parking lot. Don’t worry; you won’t need hiking boots for the walk through the forest. Surfers often walk along the wooded trail in only their flip flops and surfboard in hand. However, the walk is approximately a half mile through the forest of Sitka spruce trees.

Here are a list of towns in close proximity to Short Sands Beach:

If you are knew to the area, I believe it’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with surrounding towns and cities for easy planning and itinerary development. Many visitors to the Beaver State fly into Portland with the only goal in mind to explore the area’s phenomenal beaches. If this is your travel plan, be sure to add this list of towns to your planner.

2. What is the weather like throughout the year in Short Sands Beach?

You may be a weather geek like I am and find interest in learning weather patterns around various places of the world. However, if you are not a weather geek, you still should familiarize yourself with the weather patterns of the area before you make the trip. After all, you won’t know what clothing to pack if you are not familiar with the forecast!

Lucky for you that the Short Sand Beach area has a fairly mild climate throughout the year. Let’s take a look at the climate patterns for every season.

During the winter months, the average high temperature at Short Sands Beach hovers around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The average low temperature hovers around 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Sure, it gets chilly, but you have no need to pack Arctic winter gear. Furthermore, the area rarely ever receives snowfall. The precipitation of choice at Short Sands Beach is plenty of rainfall. I highly recommend packing a raincoat and umbrella for your travels to the area. With a Mediterranean-style climate, you can expect a lot of rain. Don’t worry; the area sees plenty of sunny days, too!

During the summer months, you can expect an average high temperature to hover around a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit. (Yes, you read that correctly. Short Sands Beach rarely sees scorching, high heat temperatures in the summertime.) The average low temperature for the summer months generally hovers around 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, if you are from the warmer states, I suggest packing a jacket for your summertime travels as well.

The spring and autumn seasons offer temperatures that fluctuate between the 40s to the 60s. This is not a place to prepare for blizzards and subzero temperatures. Just make sure to have an umbrella handy and you will be well prepared.

The coastal areas in Oregon are much warmer than other parts of the Beaver State. This has much to do with the Cascade Mountain Range to the east and the great Pacific Ocean to the west. While other parts of Oregon receive yearly snowfall, the coastal area does not.

Furthermore, the coastal area of Oregon is not like the coastal area in Florida. The beaches in Oregon stand out because of the milder temperatures, the incredible rock and cliff formations, and the serenity of lush, green forests and wooded areas on the coastline. You can literally be standing on the beach and soaking in the views of marine life while also savoring the sights of deer and foxes in the forests behind the sandy beaches. Don’t expect to find palm trees and coconuts on the Oregon Coast. Let’s save that for Florida, okay?

3. What can I do for fun at Short Sands Beach?

As long as you are respectful to the wildlife and land, you can basically do whatever you wish at Short Sands Beach! It is a popular area for surfers to practice their wave catching techniques, so don’t be surprised if you see folks walking along the forested trail with surfboards and lunch pails in hand.

Other folks enjoy taking their boogie boards to ride the waves for fun. (Short Sands Beach sometimes has incredible waves that provide fun for the entire family!) It is a great place to pack a picnic lunch and set up an area to savor a nice meal while soaking in the views of spectacular sights and nature sounds.

If you don’t feel like getting your feet wet, the area is a wonderful place to take a relaxing stroll and to soak up some peaceful time with those you care about or by yourself. Many travelers to the area simply enjoy the exploration of a new area as it truly does look like a scene from a movie.

Furthermore, the parking at Oswald West State Park is free. This means that your access to Short Sands Beach is completely free from a monetary perspective. The only price to pay is your time. Since this is a popular place, the most visitors flock to the area during the summer months. However, do not disregard its charm during the cooler months. I, personally, enjoy taking photos and capturing artistic nature shots of places I visit. Short Sands Beach is a photographer’s dream. It’s great for purely nature photos and also for family photos.

4. Can you tell me a little bit of history on Short Sands Beach, Oregon?

Going way back in the day before white settlers moved in, archaeologists have found confirming evidence that the Tillamook and Clatsop natives regularly visited Short Sands Beach. By the time white settlers started to move into the area, Short Sands Beach became a popular resting and camping site for early travelers who were in route to Astoria. Families would park their wagons and set up camp for the night. The tall cliffs on either side of the beach offered a sense of security for the campers.

By the 1920s and 1930s, Short Sands Beach began to emerge as place of choice for families to have picnics and other recreational outdoor activities. Children would enjoy flying their kites or playing chase on the soft sands of the beach.

When the 1970s rolled around, professional surfers discovered the area and realized it was a great place to catch some waves and to work on their surfing techniques. It didn’t take long for the news to travel to other surfers. Pretty soon, Short Sands Beach became a top choice location for surfers.

Whether you enjoy surfing or exploring, Short Sands Beach is the perfect beachy location for taking a break from the real world. Do yourself a favor and check out the place once you arrive to beautiful Oregon!
