The most culturally ambitious small town in America. A Tony Award-winning repertory theater, Rogue Valley wine country with Tempranillo and Syrah, Lithia Park by Golden Gate Park’s architect, and Crater Lake 90 minutes away. All of it walkable.

Rogue Valley Grows What Willamette Can't

Klamath River

Dams Removed 2024 · New Rafting Season 2026

Ashland is the most culturally ambitious small town in Oregon — and possibly in America. A town of 21,000 people in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon that somehow sustains a world-class repertory theater company, a restaurant scene that rivals cities ten times its size, a wine country with 150+ wineries growing grapes that the Willamette Valley can’t, and a 93-acre park designed by the same landscape architect who created San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. All of it within walking distance.

The combination is genuinely unlike anything else in Oregon. Portland has food and culture but not the intimacy. Bend has outdoor access but not the arts. Ashland has figured out how to be all of it — sophisticated but not pretentious, walkable but not tiny, cultured but still unmistakably Oregon.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

One of the oldest and largest professional nonprofit theaters in the country — producing 10 plays across three theaters from March through October. Received the Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. A town of 21,000 sustaining programming you’d expect in New York or London.
⭐ Outdoor · Jun–Oct · The Signature Experience

Allen Elizabethan Theatre

An outdoor stage modeled on an Elizabethan-era theater. Watching Shakespeare under a sky full of stars, with the Cascade foothills as a backdrop, is one of the great cultural experiences in the western United States. Bring a blanket for cool evenings. This is the one that stays with you.

600 Seats · Major Productions · Year-Round

Angus Bowmer Theatre

The 600-seat main indoor stage with excellent acoustics and sightlines. Where the major productions — musicals, American classics, and the most ambitious new works — typically run. In 2026: Come From Away (Tony and Olivier Award-winning 9/11 musical) runs March through October.

270 Seats · Experimental · Risk-Taking

Thomas Theatre

An intimate experimental space that fosters a close connection between audience and actors. Contemporary works, bold new plays, and the kind of risk-taking programming that keeps the festival creatively vital. The most adventurous of the three stages.

🎭 2026 Season Highlights — March 13 through October 25

Ten productions this season across all three stages. Book early — popular shows sell out, especially summer weekends. The free Green Show starts nightly at 6:30 PM with rotating local entertainment on the festival grounds — a wonderful pre-show tradition. Backstage tours available.

🌟 The Secret Season — September & October

Our top pick for visiting OSF. The theater season is still in full swing but crowds thin significantly. Seat availability improves dramatically. The weather is warm and dry. The final performances of closing shows carry an emotional weight unique to repertory theater — actors have been living in these roles for months, and the performances have a depth that early-season shows are still building toward. Fall harvest energy adds to the atmosphere.

Lithia Park & Downtown.

🌲 93 Acres · 2 Miles · 100-Year-Old Trees

Lithia Park — The Most Beautiful City Park in Oregon

Following Ashland Creek for nearly two miles through the center of town — hundred-year-old trees, 15 bridges, duck ponds, rose gardens, a playground, and the Japanese Garden (opened 2023, free, no pets). Designed by John McLaren, the same landscape architect who shaped San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and it shows. Walking from the downtown plaza into the park feels like stepping from a charming small town into a Pacific Northwest forest.

Arguably the most beautiful city park in Oregon — and because it’s in Ashland rather than a major city, you might have significant stretches of it to yourself even in summer.

🏛️ Downtown Plaza

The Cultural Center

Restaurants with outdoor seating, galleries, independent shops, and the OSF theaters all clustered within a few walkable blocks. Third Street Books, galleries like Adelante and Currents, Branson’s Chocolates (handmade in small batches), and the Lithia Artisans Market (local vendors, handcrafted goods, artisanal food). Southern Oregon University adds youthful energy and a steady stream of cultural events.

🔬 Interactive Science Museum

Scienceworks Hands-On Museum

A quality interactive science museum worth knowing about if you’re visiting with kids. Underused by adult visitors but genuinely excellent.

🏫 Southern Oregon University

College-Town Energy

SOU adds cultural programming, a youthful presence, and a calendar of lectures, performances, and events that extends Ashland’s cultural life beyond OSF. Check the SOU events calendar when planning your visit.

🌸 The Japanese Garden

Opened 2023. Free. No pets. An extraordinary addition to an already remarkable park. One of the most serene spots in Southern Oregon.

Rogue Valley Wine Country.

Here’s what most Oregon visitors don’t realize: the Rogue Valley is fundamentally different from the Willamette Valley. Warmer, sunnier, higher elevation — which means completely different grapes. Where Willamette grows Pinot Noir, the Rogue thrives with Tempranillo, Syrah, Malbec, and Viognier. The landscape looks more Tuscan than Burgundian, and the wine culture has a fraction of the tourists. See our Oregon Wineries Guide.

★ Top Pick · Within 10 Min of Downtown

Irvine & Roberts Vineyards

★ Most Scenic · Tuscan Estate · All-Day Dining

Belle Fiore Winery

Pioneer · Hilltop Views · Family-Owned

Weisinger's of Ashland

Pioneer of the Rogue Valley wine scene. Family-owned with hilltop views of the valley. One of the original voices establishing that serious wine could come from Southern Oregon — the history adds weight to every pour.

Southern Rhône Varietals

Grizzly Peak Winery

Southern Rhône varietals matched to Ashland’s climate. A former wine professional called it the best wine destination in Ashland. Syrah and Viognier in a setting that makes the Willamette Valley look like a different country.

🗺️ Applegate Valley Day Trip — 45 Minutes West

One of Oregon’s newest AVAs and a hidden gem. Past the charming Gold Rush town of Jacksonville, the Applegate Valley has uncrowded, personal tasting rooms — Troon Vineyard, Schmidt Family Vineyards, and Red Lilly Vineyards are standouts. The drive through the valley is beautiful. Wine Hopper Tours operates daily winery excursions from Ashland if you’d prefer not to drive.

The Outdoor Side of Ashland.
It Surprises Theater Visitors Every Time.

Ashland is a gateway to serious outdoor recreation — the kind that surprises visitors who come only for theater. See our Oregon Hiking Guide for the full Southern Oregon trail system.

🚣 Rogue River Rafting

One of the original Wild and Scenic Rivers in America. Half-day trips pick up directly from Ashland (30-minute drive to the put-in). The standard trip progresses from mellow Class I–II rapids to exciting Class III–IV whitewater — accessible for first-timers but genuinely thrilling. Half-day trips fit perfectly alongside a morning of wine tasting or an evening at OSF.

Outfitters: Noah’s River AdventuresIndigo Creek Outfitters, and Momentum River Expeditions all operate from Ashland.

✨ New 2026 Season

🌊 Upper Klamath River Trips

The historic removal of four dams on the Klamath River — the largest dam removal project in US history — has reopened sections of whitewater that haven’t been accessible in over a century. Multiple outfitters now run Class IV+ trips on the Upper Klamath from Ashland.

This is a once-in-a-generation outdoor story. 2026 is one of the first full seasons to experience it. See our Oregon Fishing Guide for more on the restored Klamath ecosystem.

🥾 Hiking Near Ashland

The Grizzly Peak Trail offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range. The Alice in Wonderland Trails are a local favorite network near town. The Pacific Crest Trail passes near Ashland — the town has genuine trail-town culture. Pilot Rock is a dramatic basalt pinnacle south of town for more adventurous hikers.

⛷ Mt. Ashland Ski Area & Emigrant Lake

Mt. Ashland is a small, affordable, community ski mountain just 18 miles from downtown. Family-friendly skiing and snowboarding in winter with surprisingly good terrain for its size. In summer, Emigrant Lake — a reservoir just outside town — offers swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and a waterslide.

Ashland's Restaurant Scene.
Absurd for a Town This Size.

The downtown plaza has more quality dining per block than towns ten times its size, fueled by the theater crowd and Rogue Valley agriculture. See our Oregon Food & Drink Guide.
★ Fine Dining · Wine Spectator Award · 800+ Wine List

Alchemy Restaurant

At the Winchester Inn. Wine Spectator Award. 800+ wine list with deep Oregon verticals. The fine dining anchor of Ashland. The wine program alone is worth the visit — one of the most serious wine lists in Southern Oregon.
★ Pre-Theater Dining · Farm-to-Table

Larks Home Kitchen Cuisine

Inside the 1925 Ashland Springs Hotel. Farm-to-table with a Southern Oregon focus. The pre-theater dinner spot for many OSF regulars. Seasonal, locally sourced, consistently excellent.
Contemporary · Top-Reviewed · Creative Cocktails

Hearsay

Consistently one of Ashland’s top-reviewed restaurants. Creative cocktails and a menu that takes Southern Oregon ingredients seriously. The kind of restaurant that raises the entire town’s culinary reputation.
Casual Modern · Shareable Plates · Pre-Show

Brickroom

Casual modern American with small shareable plates and a downtown vibe. Great for a lighter pre-show meal when you want something satisfying without the weight of a full dinner before sitting in a theater for three hours.
🌿 Lithia Creek Views · Thai & Indonesian

Thai Pepper

Thai and Indonesian fusion in a scenic space overlooking Lithia Creek. The Satay Bar upstairs adds another dimension. One of the most atmospheric settings in downtown Ashland.
🌞 Lithia Park Entrance · Open-Air Gastro Pub

Skout

Open-air gastro pub at the entrance to Lithia Park. The afternoon beer-and-people-watching spot. Smoked trout dip, brats, and local craft beer on tap. The place for a lazy afternoon between a matinee and evening show.
🥐 French Pastries · Morning Stop

Mix Bakeshop

French pastries, excellent coffee, and house-made ice cream in a historic brick building. The morning stop before a day of theater, hiking, or wine tasting. Lines out the door on summer weekends.
🍺 Craft Beer Since 1997

Caldera Brewing

Ashland’s craft brewery since 1997. If you need a break from wine, this is your place. One of the original craft breweries in Southern Oregon, still making excellent beer decades later. See our Oregon Breweries Guide.
Dinner Theater · Alternative to OSF

Oregon Cabaret Theatre

Dinner theater that’s a genuine alternative to OSF — different vibe, smaller scale, and a fun evening. Great for visitors who want theater but found OSF sold out, or who want a contrast to the main festival’s programming.

Ashland Lodging.
Historic Properties, Boutique Inns.

Ashland’s lodging scene skews toward historic properties and boutique inns. Book early — OSF summer weekends sell out months ahead. See our Oregon Lodging Guide.

★ Landmark 1925 Hotel · Downtown

Ashland Springs Hotel

Built in 1925, this is Ashland’s landmark historic hotel. The lobby alone is worth a visit. Larks restaurant on-site. Downtown location walking distance to everything — the OSF theaters, Lithia Park, and every restaurant on this list.
★ 1886 Victorian · National Register · Best Wine List

The Winchester Inn

An 1886 Victorian named #6 Best Wine Country Hotel by USA Today. Alchemy Restaurant and Chateaubriand 36 (French steakhouse) on the property. The 800+ wine list is a destination in itself. Lovely gardens for morning espresso.
Ashland Landmark Since 1900

The Peerless Hotel

An Ashland landmark since 1900. Complimentary prosecco and truffle chocolates at check-in set the tone — a detail that tells you exactly what kind of hotel this is. Boutique, historic, and unapologetically indulgent.
Steps from All Three OSF Stages

The Columbia Hotel

The most convenient location for theater-focused visits — steps from all three OSF stages. If your visit is primarily about seeing as many shows as possible with minimal transit time, this is your base.
Mineral Soaking Tubs · Spa · Gardens

Lithia Springs Resort

Mineral-rich soaking tubs in every room, lush gardens, outdoor pool, and a spa. The most relaxation-focused option — ideal if the reason you’re here is as much about decompressing as it is about theater.

Day Trips from Ashland.

Ashland’s location makes it a natural base for exploring Southern Oregon — Crater Lake, the Applegate Valley, and the Gold Rush town of Jacksonville are all within easy reach.
🏔 ~90 Minutes · Oregon's Only National Park

Crater Lake National Park

Oregon’s only national park and the deepest lake in the United States. Ashland is the closest major town to Crater Lake, making it the ideal base for a day trip. The 33-mile Rim Drive is one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country.

Important: Our Crater Lake guide has the complete breakdown on the 2026–2028 Cleetwood Cove Trail construction and what’s accessible. The park is fully open — only one trail and the boat tours are affected.

🏘️ ~30 Minutes · Gold Rush Town · Summer Concerts

Jacksonville

A tiny, beautifully preserved Gold Rush-era town now home to the Britt Music & Arts Festival — outdoor summer concerts on a hillside amphitheater ranging from classical to blues to pop. Excellent restaurants, charming shops, and a main street that looks unchanged from 1890.

The perfect half-day trip — drive out for lunch, browse the shops, and catch a Britt concert in the evening.

🍷 ~45 Minutes · Hidden Wine Country

Applegate Valley

One of Oregon’s newest AVAs and a hidden gem. Past Jacksonville through beautiful valley country, the Applegate tasting rooms are uncrowded and personal — Troon Vineyard, Schmidt Family Vineyards, and Red Lilly Vineyards are the standouts. The drive itself is worth the trip.

⛰️ ~1.5 hrs South into California

Mt. Shasta

The 14,179-foot volcanic peak is visible from many Ashland viewpoints and makes a dramatic day trip for hikers and mountaineers. Crossing the Oregon-California border into the shadow of one of the most imposing peaks in the American West is its own experience — even just the drive is cinematic.

September & October.
The Secret Season Nobody Tells You About.

See our Best Time to Visit Oregon guide. Getting here: fly into MFR airport in Medford — 20 minutes from Ashland with service from Portland, San Francisco, LA, Denver, and Seattle. Dramatically easier than driving 4.5 hours from Portland.

September–October

⭐ OUR PICK

The theater season is still in full swing but crowds thin significantly. Seat availability improves dramatically. Warm and dry weather. Wine harvest in the Rogue Valley adds energy and harvest events. Fall color begins in Lithia Park. Closing-night performances carry unique emotional depth — actors have spent months inside these roles.

Best for: OSF quality · smaller crowds · harvest · fall color · best seat availability

Summer (Jun–Aug)

All three theaters operating including the outdoor Elizabethan. The full OSF experience — watching Shakespeare under the stars on warm evenings. Highs in the 80s-90s. Peak crowds and prices. Book everything well ahead — months ahead for summer weekends.

Best for: Elizabethan Theatre · full season · warmest weather · complete OSF experience

Spring (Mar–May)

Season opens mid-March. Smaller crowds, cooler weather, opening-night energy. OSF education programs and pre-show talkbacks have better availability. Lithia Park comes alive with blooms. Spring in the Rogue Valley is genuinely beautiful — the Japanese Garden is spectacular in March and April.

Best for: opening season · smaller crowds · Lithia Park blooms · talkback access

Winter (Dec–Feb)

OSF is dark, but Ashland remains charming. Mt. Ashland skiing, cozy restaurants, lowest lodging rates, and Lithia Park under frost. The quietest time — some visitors prefer the off-season intimacy. The restaurants and wine bars don’t slow down even when the theaters do.

Best for: skiing · restaurant dining · winter rates · solitude · Lithia Park in frost

Ashland Questions.
Answered.

Yes — though you’d be missing Ashland’s defining experience. The restaurants, Lithia Park, Rogue Valley wine tasting, Rogue River rafting, and Crater Lake proximity all stand on their own. But seeing at least one OSF production elevates the visit from good to unforgettable. If you’re on the fence, the free Green Show at 6:30 PM on the festival grounds lets you experience the atmosphere before committing to a ticket.
Two to three nights is ideal. Day one: Lithia Park, downtown exploration, OSF evening show. Day two: Crater Lake day trip or Rogue River rafting, dinner at Alchemy or Larks. Day three: Wine tasting (Ashland wineries or Applegate Valley), matinee, evening show. The rhythm of a matinee-plus-evening-show day is one of OSF’s great pleasures — two productions in one day for serious theater-goers.
September and October — the secret season. The theater is still running, crowds are smaller, seat availability improves, the weather is warm and dry, and the fall energy (harvest, color, closing-night performances) is special. The final performances of shows closing in October carry an emotional weight that’s unique to repertory theater. Summer is the full experience but the busiest. OSF runs March through October.
About 90 minutes by car. Ashland is the closest major town to the park, making it the ideal base for a Crater Lake day trip. Our Crater Lake guide has complete planning details including the 2026–2028 construction timeline — the park is fully open, only the Cleetwood Cove Trail and boat tours are affected.
Excellent — and fundamentally different from Willamette Valley wine. The Rogue Valley grows Tempranillo, Syrah, Malbec, and Viognier in a warmer, sunnier climate. Irvine & Roberts, Belle Fiore, Weisinger’s, and Grizzly Peak are all within 10 minutes of downtown. The Applegate Valley (45 minutes) is a hidden gem worth a full day trip. Wine Hopper Tours runs daily winery excursions from Ashland.
Fly into Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR) — 20 minutes from Ashland with service from Portland, San Francisco, LA, Denver, and Seattle. This is dramatically easier than driving 4.5 hours from Portland on I-5. Many visitors combine Ashland with a Crater Lake day trip on a Southern Oregon loop. Uber and Lyft are available in Ashland — unlike much of rural Oregon — so you don’t need a car for the downtown experience itself.
